Here are a few paintings by Egon Schiele that I discovered (or rediscovered) a few days ago thanks to the book 'E.Schiele' (Monsa editions).

Thank you very much Matt, what a beautiful painting you posted, this Schiele is a genious ;-)
à bientôt!

Hahaha anonyme, finalement tu as trouvé l'inspiration!

Curious about the life of Schiele, an artist whose paintings have no appeal (for me)! only seen on postcards and calendars anyway, I have just trawled through wikipedia ... the facts are usually straightforward and useful (where born, where lived, who he married etc), but when it comes to discussing his work you wonder who on earth writes the drivel. Under 'Style' someone has put :

Some view Schiele's work as being grotesque, erotic, pornographic, or disturbing, focusing on sex, death, and discovery. He focused on portraits of others as well as himself.

Really? he 'focused' on portraits ... ! This is not very enlightening! At least thanks to this post I can discover a new side to his work ... I haven't been to Vienna yet and up until now am only familiar with reproductions of half naked women who all look rather sad and bleak (and in need of a refreshing bath).

PS Hope to invite you to Vienna sometime. Not only Thomas Bernhard but Egon Schiele now! Not forgetting The Third Man ... I'll give the Ferris wheel a miss but would like to visit that doorway where you first see Harry Lime ...

What a laugh Warren reading your comment, especially the part about the women in need of a bath :-) I find lots of Schiele's work really moving, often quite sad but with energy at the same time.
Yes, what a good idea going to Vienna. I'll have to watch the third man before we go!

... and, once again here http://weimarart.blogspot.com/ there is a Schiele today, Gustav Klimt in blue smock.
Interesting how he 'sees' hands!

Chouette! Chouette!

Yes Warren, typical hands made by Schiele! I saw a photo of him in that book I read where he actually poses with his hands a bit like that. Which reminds me of El Greco who also liked a certain position of the fingers...

Well if we get to Vienna you should see plenty!

I mustn't forget to buy a cd of The Third Man ... it has just about the most evocative background music of all time ... played on the zither. How about that!
