"WHO, if I cried out, might hear me – among the ranked Angels?
Even if One suddenly clasped me to his heart
I would die of the force of his being. For Beauty is only
the infant of scarcely endurable Terror, and we
are amazed when it casually spares us.
Every Angel is terrible. "

Translated by Stephen Cohen, first Duino elegy that I found  on this German history in documents website.

Lucky man who has bought this painting which could also be called 'A Life of Contemplation'
Here is another translation:

The First Elegy
Who, if I cried out, would hear me among the angels' hierarchies?
and even if one of them pressed me suddenly against his heart:
I would be consumed in that overwhelming existence.
For beauty is nothing but the beginning of terror, which we are still just able to endure,
and we are so awed because it serenely disdains to annihilate us.
Every angel is terrifying.

Precioso.
Un beso

Warren, I had a look at several translations, and I like very much this one you found. I think had seen it but I wanted one that said "every angel is terrible" as opposed to "terrifying". But for the rest I think I prefer yours :-)

This is beautiful, Lucie. Also, I like 'terrible' more than 'terrifying'; I do prefer the rest of the Mitchell translation, though.

I agree Matt, and maybe another translation exists that would satisfy us entirely
