Antonio Saura por sí mismo

Edición presentada por Olivier Weber-Caflisch, Lundwerg editores, 2009

Multitud, El País, 1994

Retrato imaginario de Felipe II, 1989

Cabeza, 1984

This beautiful book contains more than 300 works by Antonio Saura (Spanish artist, 1930-1998) and approximately 90 texts he wrote about his paintings, illustrations and engravings. For those who like Saura's work (and here I include myself), it is marvellous. The reproductions are really good quality and I find what he writes very interesting. Do have a look at Saura's website to discover more about him and his work.

Yes, the intensity reminds me of André Masson.

Saludos!

Hi Matt, I've just had a look at several paintings by André Masson thanks to you, and yes, I see what you mean.

Any relation? Yes, he is Carlos Saura's brother, up there among the best Spanish film directors (IMHO)!

'Ana and the wolves' was one of those films I thought about for weeks after seeing it, not least because I remember Spain under Franco very well. Geraldine Chaplin was mesmerising from beginning to end. The last scene is a terrible shock even though you have been in a constant state of apprehension all the way through.

I am obsessed these days with Mariza so very nice to discover that Carlos Saura has her in 'Fados', I am off to buy the DVD!

Not surprised you didn't translate the quote here, I found another one, except not sure what the word 'ours' relates to :

'Beyond useless discussions of figurative or abstract art is the imperious necessity to express oneself as one is, making ours all the energetic possibilities of the universe'. (Antonio Saura)

Perhaps you can find it in in the book and do a better job!

PS This comment began rather tenuously ... I needed that Spanish expression with Pisuerga ;-) Please write it down for me at once!

Hello Warren! "aprovechando que el Pisuerga pasa por Valladolid", :-) it's such a fun expression isn't it!

Well, I haven't seen "Ana and the wolves", or "Fados" and now I would like to see both!
It's amazing how in some families several brothers and sisters become wonderful artists in different arts, like the Saura, the Claudel, or the Bugatti brothers,...
