Arte Ife de Nigeria

Hay una exposición estupenda en la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando en Madrid, sobre el arte Ife, de Nigeria. La he visto ayer y la recomiento a todos los amantes de la escultura. Se llama Dinastía y Divinidad, Arte Ife en la antigua Nigeria, y está hasta el 13 de diciembre.

There is a wonderful exhibition in the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid about Ife art, from Nigeria. I saw it yesterday and I recommend it to any sculpture lover coming to Madrid before 13th December 2009. Aren't these sculptures stunning?

Il y a une magnifique exposition à la
Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando de Madrid, sur l'art Ife, du Niger. Je l'ai vue hier et je la recommande à tous les amateurs de sculpture se trouvant à Madrid avant le 13 décembre 2009.

Hola Lucie, qué casualidad, yo también estuve ayer en el Museo de Bellas Artes, aunque no ví la exposición, fui a ver otra cosa y era muy tarde. Gracias por la recomendación, volveré para verla, me ha gustado mucho el video.

How absolutely beautiful!

I would love to see this exhibition ... I wanted to find out more and I have learnt a lot already through various sites.

http://www.africanart.org is one of them.
Here you can see that the exhibition is moving to The British Museum in London next March.

So for anyone who can't make a quick trip to Madrid ... patience!

¡Hola Lucié!
Me ha gustado mucho el vídeo al que nos enlazas. La máscara de cobre de Obulafon (no sé si lo memorizo bien) es muy interesante.
Sobre todo me gusta la de madera tallada que expones en el blog. África es muy interesante en el Arte y así se demuestra cuando tantos pintores, escultores... se inspiraron en él. Saludos afectuosos.

Here is an interesting paragraph:

So impressive are some of these objects that Leo Frobenius, one of the first Europeans to see Ife art, in 1910, could not believe they were produced by Africans. Following European prejudices and ignorance, he attributed the sophisticated, naturalistic works of Ife to a lost Greek civilization, Atlantis. He thought the sculpture could not have been made by an African people.
