Self-portrait as Zeusis

Rembrandt is definitely one of my favourite painters. His portraits fascinate me, especially his self-portraits. He painted more than a hundred self-portraits, and this one, "as Zeuxis" is his last one. He often painted himself in different disguises, wearing hats, or making faces. I love that. Zeuxis was a Greek painter, who died of laughter while painting an old woman.
The exhibition called "Rembrandt painter of stories" can be seen in the Prado in Madrid until 6th January.

Manuel.

I never knew about Zeuxis ... it reminds me of the expression 'there is nothing new under the sun'

"There really is nothing new under the sun - except when somebody has a bright idea about how to apply paint!"

Hope I manage to stick my name up this time. I had a look at Making a mark on your blog roll and found the above sentence in the review of the book about the Impressionists. Coincidence!
